The Art and Design Department provides a program tailored for students seeking a well-rounded arts education within a liberal arts framework. Aspiring artists enjoy diverse avenues to showcase their creativity and secure career opportunities post-graduation. Learners can investigate multiple artistic disciplines before selecting the specialization that aligns with their passions and abilities.
The Bachelor of Arts curriculum caters to students pursuing: (1) a liberal arts education with an art focus, (2) concentrated art studies, (3) graduate school preparation in arts, (4) training for academic and professional careers, and/or (5) art teaching credential requirements.
All Art majors must complete the foundational lower and upper division coursework. Students then choose elective units from various departmental concentrations to fulfill their BA requirements in their selected discipline. The program also provides extracurricular experiences to enhance professional competencies and career prospects.
The department aims to deliver a comprehensive visual arts education covering three key disciplines: art education, art history, and studio arts. The curriculum fosters visual literacy, creative problem-solving, and the appreciation of perception, experimentation, innovation, and analytical thinking. Students explore art's historical evolution, its cultural significance, and its societal impact. Specialization options include animation, ceramics, digital arts, drawing, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography/video, printmaking, and sculpture.
