A joint doctoral program in Special Education, provided through a collaboration between UCLA and Cal State LA, leverages the distinct strengths of both universities. This curriculum equips students for roles in special education teacher training or leadership positions within the discipline. It centers on disability-related topics in special education, with an emphasis on educator preparation, theoretical frameworks, teaching methodologies, and investigative studies. Alumni are qualified for academic positions where they'll oversee teacher training programs, conduct research, and engage in scholarly activities concerning special education and disabilities. The program awards a Ph.D. in special education, mandating students to develop comprehensive expertise in the field while allowing specialization in areas such as: early childhood education, learning disorders, emotional and behavioral challenges, cognitive disabilities, significant impairments, physical and health-related conditions, vision impairments, cultural and language diversity, and adult transition programs. The degree necessitates core studies in special education, supplementary coursework in related disciplines, and studies in an external complementary field. Specialized courses and research seminars provide technical expertise within the chosen concentration.
