This 60-credit graduate program focuses on choreographic development and performance, while preparing students for academic teaching positions. MFA students undertake both theoretical and practical coursework leading to a final choreographic thesis presented at CSULB.
The Dance Department maintains a limited enrollment for its MFA program to ensure sufficient resources and teaching experiences for each participant. Ideal applicants possess substantial choreographic experience with 3-5 years of professional practice following their undergraduate degree. Dance practitioners from all stylistic backgrounds are welcome to apply.
Create dances that effectively convey artistic vision, demonstrating abilities in concept realization, performer collaboration, incorporating feedback, refining work, and thoughtfully examining the piece's cultural relevance.
When producing dance performances, students will gain practical expertise in lighting, costumes, stage management, technical direction, audience services, and marketing. They'll also learn to collaborate effectively with theater production teams.
Express artistic and educational philosophies clearly through both speech and writing, preparing for careers in academia or professional dance.
