The Metal program at CSULB provides professional training for B.F.A., M.A., and M.F.A. degrees. Its experienced and diverse faculty fosters skill development, personal expression, and outstanding design. Students explore metalworking techniques to create both practical and artistic pieces. The undergraduate curriculum builds core skills in jewelry and metalsmithing while introducing enameling, architectural metalwork, and blacksmithing. This versatile approach allows students to pursue personal creative directions, from delicate jewelry to large-scale metal installations. The facilities feature a main studio with 24 jewelry fabrication stations, casting equipment, and enameling workspaces, plus an outdoor area for blacksmithing and metal sculpture accommodating eighteen students. Additional resources include electroplating, anodizing, and electroforming equipment. Metal studios remain accessible to enrolled students 24/7, including weekends.
Graduate students enjoy dedicated individual workspaces in a separate studio. The program challenges them through regular critiques to refine their artistic vision and develop independent creative approaches. Graduate candidates should demonstrate self-motivation and comprehensive metalsmithing experience. They're encouraged to utilize resources across the School of Art and nearby artistic communities. Our graduate program welcomes diverse perspectives, supporting artistic exploration without material or technical constraints.
