The field of biological sciences encompasses all scientific pursuits focused on understanding the fundamental nature of life. This broad discipline spans specialties like genetics, genomics, physiology, cellular biology, marine biology, ecology, and animal behavior studies. Within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Department of Biological Sciences provides five distinct degree programs: a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, along with Master of Science degrees in both Biology and Microbiology. The Biology B.S. program offers not only a general track but also three specialized concentrations: Biology Education, Zoology/Botany/Ecology, and Molecular Cell Biology/Physiology. Detailed requirements for each program are outlined below. The department collaborates with both the Desert Studies Consortium and the Ocean Studies Institute (program details available in the Ocean Studies Institute section of this catalog). The Zoology/Botany/Ecology concentration specifically prepares students for careers in zoology, ecological sciences, and botany, serving as excellent preparation for veterinary or graduate programs, as well as positions with environmental consulting firms and wildlife agencies. This concentration typically involves completing 80-83 major units, with 43-46 lower division and 37 upper division course requirements.
