The field of biological sciences encompasses all scientific pursuits focused on understanding the essence of life. This broad discipline spans numerous specialties including genetics, genomics, physiology, cell biology, marine biology, ecology, and animal behavior. Within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Department of Biological Sciences provides five degree programs: a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, a Master of Science in Biology, and a Master of Science in Microbiology. The Biology B.S. program offers not only a general track but also three specialized concentrations in Biology Education, Zoology, Botany & Ecology, and Molecular Cell Biology and Physiology. Detailed requirements for each degree and specialization are outlined below. Additionally, the Department collaborates with the Desert Studies Consortium and the Ocean Studies Institute, with further details about the latter available in the Ocean Studies Institute section of this catalog.
