A major constitutes the core focus area within an academic degree program, representing specialized study in a particular discipline. While completing an English major is essential, it alone doesn't fulfill graduation requirements. CSULB's Bachelor of Arts currently mandates 120 academic units (with each unit equating to approximately 15 weeks of one-hour classes), with most English concentrations requiring 41 units (English Education demands 50-57 units). The B.A. also includes a 48-unit General Education curriculum that varies based on a student's initial college year. To reach the 120-unit threshold, students must complete electives, which could involve additional English courses, pursuing a second major or minor, obtaining a certificate, or exploring subjects beyond GE requirements. Academic advisors - including faculty, staff, and trained student mentors - can provide guidance in navigating these requirements. Beyond the English Department, this brochure identifies additional resources for academic support.
