The Master of Social Work program stands as Orange County's sole public university offering. It delivers both foundational and advanced coursework focused on direct service methods through a multicultural lens. This framework equips students with core social work competencies for diverse populations, along with specialized skills for leadership positions across public, nonprofit, and voluntary social service organizations. Graduates qualify for professional roles in numerous sectors such as mental/behavioral health (including psychotherapy), child welfare, geriatric services, medical social work (hospitals, dialysis centers), school social work, criminal justice (therapy, mediation), addiction treatment, community development, and social service administration. The program specifically targets career preparation in these fields. Broadly speaking, the M.S.W. degree develops professionals capable of improving social dynamics for individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Students can specialize in three key areas: Gerontology, Child Welfare, or Community Mental Health. This degree serves as a California state requirement for pursuing licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Coursework encompasses human development theory, social policy, and research methodologies, with strong emphasis on practical application - a hallmark of this hands-on profession. Throughout the program, students complete 1,050 hours of fieldwork at social service agencies, gaining direct client experience alongside practice-focused coursework and seminars.
