The Department of Viticulture and Enology at California State University, Fresno was formally created in July 2000. Its academic programs are deeply rooted in scientific disciplines including botany, chemistry, soil science, and microbiology. Viticulture and enology courses enable students to apply fundamental scientific principles to grape cultivation and winemaking, with ample practical learning opportunities. Our institution boasts the world's sole university teaching complex featuring 120 acres of vineyards for table grapes, raisins, and wine production, alongside a commercial-scale 50,000-gallon winery and a small-scale raisin processing plant. This distinctive blend of academic rigor and practical facilities has nurtured generations of acclaimed viticulturists and winemakers.
Our department strives to become a globally recognized hub of excellence that serves both students and the wider community. We provide comprehensive viticulture and enology programs that combine specialized coursework with core scientific subjects (such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics) and business management training, creating a robust educational framework.
