This marine science degree, jointly provided by the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, equips students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge for professional roles as marine experts, researchers, and educators. Moss Landing's program facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration and offers unique field facilities for advanced marine studies, resources unavailable at the Cal State East Bay main campus.
Graduates earning an M.S. in Marine Science from Cal State East Bay will develop the following competencies:
Master core principles within specific oceanography and marine science disciplines while
integrating knowledge across these fields, while achieving specialized expertise in their chosen focus area (MLML specializations encompass Physical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Geological Oceanography, Marine Phycology, Marine Ichthyology, Marine Turtle, Bird and Mammal Ecology, and Marine Invertebrate Zoology.)
Develop skills to rigorously evaluate scientific studies, including both personal research and others' work.
Formulate meaningful scientific hypotheses or research questions to direct thesis investigations.
