The Philosophy Department at California State University, East Bay is dedicated to fostering inquiry into timeless human questions - including those about knowledge, morality, truth, and divinity. While honoring traditional philosophical studies, the department also motivates students to examine current issues critically, especially in fields like legal systems, civil liberties, equity in society, scientific progress, technological ethics, and religious thought. Faculty members work to cultivate enduring intellectual practices in students: challenging assumptions, considering opposing perspectives, and participating in thoughtful, authentic discourse. Through their emphasis on critical thinking, understanding, and expression, they seek to nurture attributes crucial for individual growth, community engagement, and professional achievement.
Philosophy attracts diverse students with varied aspirations. Some plan to pursue advanced philosophy degrees, frequently aiming for academic careers in research and teaching. Others view philosophy as foundational training for different professions. Historically, philosophy has been a primary pathway to legal education. It also provides excellent broad-based liberal arts training, as numerous established academic fields originate from philosophical foundations: government studies, social sciences, pedagogy, artistic theory, natural sciences, and more. Additionally, many choose philosophy majors to develop skills valuable in careers demanding clear thinking, analytical prowess, effective writing, and logical argumentation.
