Saint Louis University's Department of Philosophy aims to deliver philosophical instruction aligned with Catholic and Jesuit educational principles. This objective stems from the core Catholic conviction that every aspect of human existence reflects and communicates God's presence and character, while affirming the inherent worth of every individual and their role within society. The department is committed to offering outstanding foundational training in philosophical study and application. Professors work to develop students' capacity to comprehend, articulate, and assess arguments, encourage thoughtful ethical living, and instruct them in philosophical history, current discussions, and Catholic intellectual traditions. Faculty members cultivate in students a philosophical perspective, respect for Western thought traditions, an inquisitive mindset, and an enduring pursuit of wisdom.
