The Ethnic Studies program features an interdisciplinary major that takes a comparative perspective on the study of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. With a curriculum centered on social justice, our program examines the cultural traditions, historical experiences, and contemporary realities of communities of color. Graduates emerge equipped to engage effectively with diverse racial, ethnic, and gender communities.
The 36-unit major offers students significant flexibility, enabling specialization in one focus area while developing comprehensive understanding of various communities of color. Working with academic advisors, students customize their course of study according to their academic objectives. The program includes 18 units of core requirements, 12 units in a chosen concentration, and 6 units of Ethnic Studies electives. Concentration options include: American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Genders and Sexualities in Communities of Color, and Latinx/Chicanx Studies.
