The Philosophy program empowers students to critically examine diverse belief and value systems, reflect on the roots of their own convictions, cultivate analytical thinking and communication skills, and apply these abilities to contemporary challenges.
Derived from the Greek terms philo (love) and sophia (wisdom), Philosophy fundamentally represents the pursuit of wisdom. This discipline systematically investigates and structures perspectives on the fundamental principles shaping thought, action, and existence.
California State University Bakersfield's Philosophy Program provides both a Bachelor of Arts major and minor option. Philosophy majors can specialize in one of three concentrations: Ethics & Moral Reasoning, Law, Justice, & Social Policy, or Mind & World.
Philosophy students at CSUB gain comprehensive knowledge of philosophical traditions while honing rigorous analytical skills. The curriculum features diverse courses such as Metaphysics, Ethics, Existentialism, Epistemology, Political Philosophy, and more, equipping graduates with both philosophical depth and practical competencies for future success.
