History examines our past, going beyond simple facts to analyze evolving patterns, ideas, and societal transformations. This discipline enables us to comprehend our present identity and clarifies relationships between nations and cultures. In essence, history illuminates how change occurs. While current events don't simply repeat the past, they emerge from historical contexts—beliefs, pressures, and circumstances shaped by earlier times. Ignoring this historical perspective carries significant consequences.
To help learners recognize these connections, our History Department provides diverse courses covering U.S., European, Asian, and Latin American studies.
The History/SSSE major pathway equips students for fifth-year credential programs in Single Subject Secondary Education. This specialized track combines a History major with foundational studies in Economics, Geography, Political Science, and Sociology—essential preparation for teaching Social Science in California and passing the CSET examination.
