The economics department prioritizes student education above all else. We collaborate extensively with our majors to create a dynamic learning atmosphere where classroom instruction is complemented by hands-on faculty-student partnerships on community initiatives. Our compact urban setting offers economics students an ideal platform to grow while contributing to the community through diverse research and service-learning projects. These range from analyzing the Oyster Festival's economic effects to assisting with Arcata's urban planning and contributing to the Humboldt Economic Index. Students have co-authored faculty publications on regional fuel markets and fisheries, while exploring renewable energy and property economics.
Faculty expertise spans innovative fields including Sports Economics, Environmental Resource Economics, Property Market Analysis, Energy Sector Economics, and Sustainable Growth. Our curriculum integrates cutting-edge digital tools throughout. Following liberal arts principles, we foster comprehensive education, effective communication, analytical reasoning, and holistic personal growth in our evolving global context. We aim to deepen comprehension of economic systems and their connections to societal structures, while embracing diverse perspectives and values.
