Caltech is widely recognized as a premier research institution, with much of its prestige stemming from the excellence of its graduate students. The Electrical Engineering Department exemplifies this, where talented and driven graduate students work alongside faculty, contributing to its status as one of the nation's leading programs. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree, students may pursue a Master of Science in electrical engineering, followed by advanced degrees such as Electrical Engineer or Doctor of Philosophy. Admission to Caltech's electrical engineering graduate program is highly selective, with the Admissions Committee choosing candidates who demonstrate exceptional qualifications and fit for the program. GRE scores are required for application. Typically, Ph.D. applicants are initially admitted only for the MSEE but are assessed based on their research potential in specific areas. A well-articulated statement of purpose and strong recommendation letters are crucial. Throughout the master's year, Ph.D. candidates are evaluated based on coursework and an oral presentation in their second quarter. Faculty mentorship and research group integration play key roles, with the master's degree deferred until Ph.D. program admission. The Ph.D. qualifying exam must be completed by the end of the third academic year. Applicants with a master's degree from another U.S. institution may enter the Ph.D. program directly, provided they secure advance acceptance into a research group.
