The field of information and data sciences now integrates not only conventional disciplines like computer science, applied mathematics, and electrical engineering—including signal processing, information theory, communication systems, control theory, decision analysis, probability, statistics, and algorithms—but also emerging domains such as machine learning, network analysis, distributed computing, and neural science. This convergence has created a distinct discipline that differs significantly from traditional fields like computer science and statistics, while playing a vital role in contemporary applications across physical sciences, social sciences, and engineering. The Information and Data Science specialization emphasizes rigorous mathematical foundations, drawing from probability theory, statistical methods, linear algebra, and signal processing. These core mathematical areas form the essential building blocks of modern data science.
