The Department of Slavic Studies provides an extensive PhD program focusing on Russian literature and culture, contemporary Czech culture, and Polish literary traditions. This interdisciplinary program encourages collaboration between departmental professors and scholars from connected disciplines including comparative literature, theater arts, historical studies, visual arts, contemporary media studies, and political sciences. Our curriculum prepares adaptable, forward-thinking academics equipped to meet evolving educational and research demands in academia. Ideal candidates will possess substantial expertise in one or more core areas (literary studies, linguistics, cultural analysis, performing arts, or social sciences). Participants benefit from personalized academic advising and mentorship in both language instruction and cultural/literary pedagogy.
Graduates of non-U.S. colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
