The PhD program is designed for individuals with a robust foundation in undergraduate mathematics and a passion for research. While many of our students aspire to academic careers, others secure positions in fields like industry or finance.
First-year students receive fellowship support, typically transitioning to teaching assistant roles in their second year.
We strive to foster a nurturing atmosphere for teaching, learning, and mathematical innovation. With approximately 40 graduate students and 25 faculty/postdocs, our intimate program facilitates close faculty interaction and a tight-knit community. The curriculum adapts to varying levels of preparation, and over 85% of admitted students successfully earn their PhD.
The department hosts weekly seminars covering diverse areas including Algebra, Geometry/Topology, Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, and Algebraic Geometry, alongside a weekly Colloquium and a student-led Graduate Student Seminar.
Applicants should have a solid grounding in undergraduate mathematics. Courses taken beyond calculus and linear algebra should certainly include analysis and abstract algebra and a number of others, but there is flexibility as to which others.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
