The Italian Studies Doctoral program equips students for academic careers in an evolving landscape that increasingly values interdisciplinary cultural studies over conventional language and literature instruction. A key advantage for our students is comprehensive training in teaching language and culture across different proficiency levels, combined with exposure to cutting-edge research techniques and pedagogical approaches, including digital humanities specialization. Guided by distinguished global experts, the program enables in-depth exploration of Italy's language, historical development, and cultural heritage through diverse disciplinary lenses including anthropology, art history, architectural studies, literary analysis, and contemporary media studies.
Graduates of non-U.S. colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
