Brown University's East Asia history program delves into the distinct historical paths of China, Japan, and Korea, examining their regional interactions and global significance across early modern and contemporary periods. The program offers robust foundational training while encouraging innovative research directions. Our faculty employ diverse methodologies, participating in cutting-edge initiatives spanning environmental history, science and disaster studies, print culture, urban comparisons, conflict and migration, as well as religious and social transformations. Graduate research has explored subjects ranging from Japanese popular culture to China's modern examination systems and frontier cartography. The program fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in trans-Pacific studies, history of science and medicine, and knowledge systems. We maintain strong partnerships with other Brown departments including American Studies, East Asian Studies, and the Watson Institute for comprehensive graduate education.
