Biology serves as a specialized track for qualified PhD candidates at Brown University who are exploring biomedical fields or have interdisciplinary research interests. Participants collaborate with biology faculty across Brown's campus, partner hospitals linked to the medical school, and the affiliated Marine Biology Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The program provides state-of-the-art research equipment and core facility access. A unified admissions committee selects leading candidates for interviews, extending offers to those demonstrating outstanding academic records, research background, and future potential. Indicators of exceptional merit may include: GRE scores in the top 15%, a minimum 3.7 GPA, published research, and exemplary letters of recommendation.
All applicants must present a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale). Applicants who have not yet completed a baccalaureate degree may apply to Alpert Medical School; however, the baccalaureate degree program must be completed prior to matriculation.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
