Brown's anthropology graduate program fosters diverse doctoral research in socio-cultural anthropology, archaeological anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. The curriculum combines foundational core courses with specialized advanced training. Graduate instruction primarily involves seminars and independent studies, creating an intensive, tutorial-style learning environment that challenges both faculty and students. The Anthropology Department brings together a dynamic group of scholars, graduate researchers, and staff united by their exploration of human societies throughout history. Our socio-cultural and linguistic anthropologists conduct ethnographic research worldwide, while our archaeological anthropologists specialize in analyzing material artifacts from ancient to contemporary American cultures.
A.M. in anthropology or its equivalent, foreign language (based on A.M./Ph.D. committee requirement), two semesters of teaching, preliminary examinations, research proposal, dissertation based on independent field research (reliance on library materials alone is acceptable only in exceptional cases)
