To graduate with honors in their chosen field, students must produce an outstanding thesis and achieve excellent grades in their concentration courses, earning mostly A's. The thesis represents a substantial, original scholarly contribution. This work may encompass various approaches, from fundamental research that drives future progress to practical solutions for environmental issues, or collaborative projects with external organizations. Students undertake the thesis during their senior year across two semesters, guided by a faculty advisor—usually an IBES Fellow, though other Brown faculty may serve as advisors with approval. A second reader, often a Brown professor or an external environmental expert, provides additional guidance and helps assess the final product.
