The Department of Computer Science provides multiple undergraduate degree options, including A.B. and Sc.B. concentrations (also known as majors). The curriculum balances comprehensive education across software, hardware, and theoretical foundations with focused study in specialized domains. Students can explore diverse fields ranging from system design and programming languages to artificial intelligence, algorithm analysis, and computational theory. As computation becomes essential across disciplines—from space exploration to neuroscience—Brown's program equips students with both foundational knowledge and specialized expertise. The curriculum covers established areas like algorithm analysis, AI, databases, and security, while also incorporating emerging fields such as gaming and scientific visualization.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
