This program is designed for students seeking advanced education beyond the BSBA, enabling them to expand their expertise and engage in research. It is not suitable for those committed to pursuing a PhD right after graduation, who should instead apply to PhD programs like Berkeley's during their senior year. Students enrolled in the five-year BAMS or BSMS can later opt to switch to a PhD program here or at another institution, though admission remains competitive with all PhD applicants. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary graduate-level training, requiring a minimum of 8 units of coursework outside EECS. Graduates will become leaders in their technical and professional domains. The five-year BS/MS program extends the standard four-year undergraduate experience with an additional year of graduate studies, equipping students for engineering or management roles in business, government, or industry. Participants earn both a bachelor's and a Master of Science degree (Plan II, non-thesis). This program fosters interdisciplinary learning through coursework and an independent project, exclusively available to Materials Science and Engineering undergraduates (including joint majors).
