The Chemistry concentration provides courses and research experiences spanning from core investigations into synthetic and natural molecular structures to interdisciplinary work bridging chemistry with biology, medicine, physics, engineering, and nanoscience. Starting in their freshman year, undergraduates can collaborate directly with faculty on pioneering research initiatives, either individually or in small teams. The Sc.B. program equips graduates for advanced academic pursuits or entry-level roles in technical fields. Students pursuing the Sc.B. can choose between the standard Chemistry path or two specialized options: Chemical Biology or Materials Chemistry. Alternatively, the A.B. degree offers fundamental training in chemistry. The Chemistry Department features three distinct Sc.B. tracks within the Chemistry Concentration - Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Materials Chemistry - all culminating in the same Sc.B. in Chemistry degree. The Chemical Biology pathway caters to those fascinated by chemistry-biology intersections, while the Materials Chemistry track focuses on chemistry's connections with nanoscience and materials science. All concentration courses must be taken for letter grades.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
