A student pursuing a ScB in one discipline (such as computer science) alongside an AB in another (like economics) may extend their studies by an additional year to fulfill concentration requirements if necessary. They must complete at least 38 courses and formally declare their intention to remain for a fifth year by their fifth semester. An alternative pathway (detailed below) involves pursuing a Master's degree. Through the Five-Year Baccalaureate/Master's Degree program, students can continue at Brown after earning their Bachelor's degree to work toward a Master's, counting certain undergraduate courses toward their graduate requirements. Applicants must seek admission to this program before finishing their undergraduate studies. Of the eight courses needed for the Master's, two may be completed during undergraduate studies, even prior to formal admission to the graduate program. A minimum of six semester courses must be taken during graduate residency. The Concurrent Baccalaureate/Master's Degree program enables high-achieving students to integrate their final undergraduate years with graduate coursework, earning both degrees simultaneously.
