Students can pursue Italian studies at Brown without prior language experience, though starting early is essential. After meeting the language requirement (Italian 0600), students gain access to advanced Italian-taught courses spanning literature, history, art history, media, and culture. Taking Italian Studies courses in English before fulfilling the language requirement is highly recommended. Concentration requirements include: 1) demonstrating Italian proficiency through language and culture courses culminating in Italian 0600, and 2) completing eight subject courses on Italian culture (with Italian 0600 counting toward this total). At least four of these eight courses must be conducted in Italian. Participation in Brown's Bologna program for a semester or full year allows concentrators to apply up to three courses per semester (or six annually) toward the concentration, provided they focus on Italy and are taught in Italian.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
