The Architectural Studies focus in the Department of History of Art and Architecture integrates multiple academic fields to examine structures and urban landscapes. This program equips students for advanced architecture and architectural history studies in graduate programs, along with professions in connected domains like urban planning. The curriculum mandates four lecture classes and two seminars on architectural and urban history provided by the department. A key component is the project seminar, taken during junior or senior year, serving as a culminating experience for Architectural Studies majors. Every student must complete this project seminar. Tailored for those pursuing architecture or similar fields, the program requires a design course from the Visual Arts Department, Rhode Island School of Design, or an introductory architectural design or theater set design class at Brown University.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
