The BYU Creative Writing MFA is a two-year graduate program that involves 26 credit hours of classes plus 6 thesis hours. Students enjoy distinctive experiences like a yearly retreat at Capitol Reef National Park, a teaching internship for introductory creative writing courses, and a weekly series featuring guest authors, all designed to enrich their graduate journey and equip them for careers in writing and education. BYU's English Department focuses exclusively on master's candidates, offering affordable tuition alongside substantial financial assistance. Applicants are evaluated on their writing portfolio, personal essay, academic background, and letters of recommendation, with attention to how well their goals align with faculty specialties. The program also offers ample travel funding for events like the AWP conference. Our department's reading series showcases both local talent and globally renowned authors including Derek Walcott, Marilynne Robinson, Yusef Komunyakaa, Terry Tempest Williams, and Robert Pinsky.
