This two-year academic program requires full-time residency. The curriculum features foundational history and theory courses, complemented by electives selected in collaboration with the student's advisor. The program culminates with comprehensive examinations and the completion of a rigorous thesis. Students can choose between two specializations: Theatre History and Critical Studies, or Media Arts Education. The Theatre History and Critical Studies track prepares graduates for community college teaching positions or advanced PhD studies. This concentration involves in-depth study of dramatic texts and modern scholarship, examination of linguistic and social theories, academic writing for conferences and journals, and dramaturgy training. Strong application materials include analytical papers on theater, which may be upper-level undergraduate work or published articles. Although practical theater experience (or some media arts involvement) is encouraged to complement academic work, the program primarily focuses on scholarly research rather than production.
