The American Psychological Association's Committee on Accreditation (750 First Street NE, Washington, DC 20002; phone: (202) 336-5979; fax: (202) 336-5978) has accredited this counseling psychology PhD program. Rooted in psychological principles, the program follows the scientist-practitioner training framework. This model represents a unified educational approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of theoretical knowledge, research methodologies, and practical application.
BYU's counseling psychology curriculum focuses on the instructional, developmental, and preventative roles of counseling psychologists. The program primarily trains students for careers as counseling psychologists in academic environments and university counseling centers, while also equipping them to provide corrective therapeutic services. Most graduates pursue roles as psychologists or counselors in higher education settings or join faculty positions in psychology and counselor education programs. Some alumni also obtain licensure to practice in private clinical settings or community agencies.
