The Department of Plant and Wildlife Sciences addresses four critical challenges of the 21st century: applying biological innovations to support growing populations in developing nations, reducing humanity's environmental footprint, preserving wildlife and natural habitats, and optimizing urban landscapes amid resource constraints while improving visual appeal. Genetics, Genomics and Biotechnology majors can select from four specialized academic paths, each featuring foundational genetics, biology, and chemistry coursework plus targeted electives.
Career Paths - Genetics and biotechnology applies molecular science to address health, agriculture, forensic, and environmental challenges. This rapidly evolving field offers solutions for global food security, personalized medicine, and ecological conservation. The program combines theoretical learning with hands-on research alongside faculty and graduate students, equipping graduates for biotech careers or advanced studies in genetics, molecular biology, or healthcare. Students may also pursue a business-focused track with management courses from the Marriott School, preparing for leadership roles in life sciences or careers in biotech patent law.
Genetics, Genomics & Biotechnology majors select either a pure science curriculum or a hybrid science-business program, both built on rigorous genetics, biology, and chemistry foundations with specialized course options.
