Becoming a music educator in schools is a rewarding career path that offers lasting joy and creative expression. To support this goal, the BYU School of Music provides both undergraduate and graduate programs in music education. Aspiring educators can earn bachelor's degrees with teaching certification in general music, secondary choral, or secondary instrumental music. The school also offers Master of Arts and Master of Music degrees in this field.
Similar to other music majors, undergraduate music education students join BYU's performance groups and complete core music coursework. Additionally, they take diverse classes and gain hands-on experiences tailored to teaching various grade levels within their specialization. From their first semester, students gain real-world teaching practice in public schools under the guidance of BYU's distinguished music education faculty, each contributing unique expertise. Graduates are highly valued by employers for their exceptional training and teach in schools across the U.S. and Canada.
This program fulfills Utah's professional licensing requirements for music educators. Students planning to teach in other states should consult BYU's academic advisors and their target state's licensing board to understand certification requirements.
