Brigham Young University's Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program provides former BYU students who have taken a break from their studies and cannot return to campus with a chance to complete their degree remotely. To qualify, applicants need a minimum of 30 credit hours earned as admitted day students at BYU's Provo campus, must follow the BYU Honor Code, and obtain an annual ecclesiastical endorsement. Refer to Admission Requirements and About BYU Ecclesiastical Endorsements for details. Current BYU students with less than 90 credits (excluding exam credit) are ineligible.
The Family History specialization demands 12 credits of family history-related courses. Presently, Independent Study offers only 8 academic credits. Students can fulfill the remaining requirements through Directed Research (HIST 481R), Academic Internship credit (HIST 496R), or BYU-Idaho Online courses. Note that BYU-I courses follow a semester system and involve collaborative assignments. Those considering the Family History track should consult their advisor to review their progress and create a completion strategy.
BGS students focusing on family history may now enroll in BYU-Idaho courses as elective substitutes (ii). Prior to approval, students must successfully complete Hist 217, The Family Historian's Craft, then notify the BGS office to facilitate registration with BYU-Idaho.
