Brigham Young University's Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program provides former BYU students who have taken a break from their studies and cannot return to campus with a chance to complete their degree remotely. To qualify, applicants need to have earned at least 30 credit hours as enrolled day students at BYU's Provo campus. Participants must follow the BYU Honor Code and obtain yearly ecclesiastical endorsements. For details, review the Admission Requirements and About BYU Ecclesiastical Endorsements. Current BYU students with under 90 credits (excluding exam credit) are ineligible. This degree program helps former students maximize their previously completed coursework. It follows the same academic standards as on-campus programs, including general education, religious education, and residency requirements. Students can complete up to 90 of the 120 required credits through BYU Independent Study, with a general studies major focusing on one of six specialized areas.
The elective options for each emphasis include currently available Independent Study courses, along with relevant BYU campus course categories that fulfill emphasis requirements.
Complete 27 hours of campus residency.
Finish at least 10 emphasis hours after being officially admitted to the BGS program.
Thirty of the total 120 credits must be at the 300-level or higher.
IS 110, MSB 360, and M Com 320 credits must be earned within the last 15 years.
