The Musical Dance Theatre (MDT) program at BYU ranks among the nation's premier university programs for aspiring musical theater professionals. For three decades, our alumni have seamlessly transitioned from academic training to Broadway and major performance venues nationwide. This selective BFA program stands out for its balanced emphasis on music, dance, and theater training within a spiritually enriching environment. At BYU, students receive personalized guidance from faculty who bring both professional performance experience and academic expertise to their artistic development.
Our stage serves as a creative workshop. Students annually perform classic musical theater repertoire alongside innovative new works, music videos, and revues. Notable past productions include Phantom of the Opera, Light In The Piazza, and Into The Woods.
Despite our location in Utah's Rocky Mountains, we maintain strong ties to Broadway's elite performers. Renowned artists including Sutton Foster, Audra McDonald, Mandy Patinkin, and Lea Salonga frequently visit BYU for performances and student coaching sessions. During a recent master class, Frank Wildhorn, creator of The Scarlet Pimpernel and Bonnie and Clyde, was so moved by our MDT students' abilities that he selected BYU for the U.S. debut of his new production, Count of Monte Cristo.
