The BYU Illustration program equips students with the expertise needed to thrive in dynamic and demanding creative industries. Faculty members, who are accomplished illustrators themselves, share practical knowledge and industry perspectives in the classroom. The curriculum includes training in career management, business strategies, and self-promotion for aspiring artists. Students in the program consistently earn top honors in national competitions, while alumni secure prominent positions in the field. Through competitive scholarships and visits from world-renowned artists, the program fosters artistic growth. It also facilitates professional development through conference attendance, educational trips, internships, and international study programs.
Admission to the Illustration BFA program is selective and requires departmental approval. Prospective students must declare their pre-major interest, finish DESIL101, and submit a digital portfolio to gain pre-BFA standing. Applications for pre-BFA status are due at the conclusion of Fall semester, Winter semester, and Spring term. Those accepted will complete prerequisite courses before applying for full BFA program admission.
Foundational coursework and subsequent application to the professional program through a June portfolio review are exclusively available to students with pre-BFA status.
