Asia and the Near East host some of humanity's most ancient civilizations. Exploring these regions' languages and cultures opens doors to extraordinarily diverse traditions of philosophy, religion, and social practices. These areas encompass much of the world's non-Christian population, with Asia maintaining its mystical allure through Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, despite many Asian nations now leading global economic and political developments. The Near East, origin of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, remains a frequently misunderstood region of immense religious, economic, and strategic significance. Korean presents linguistic challenges, and BYU's program focuses equally on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, while highlighting the language's literary heritage.

While government agencies (NSA, CIA, FBI) employ many Korean majors, the degree also provides broad liberal arts benefits. Graduates often pursue professional degrees in law, business, or medicine. Korean studies pair exceptionally well with prelaw, political science, accounting, English, international relations, and other disciplines. As a key language in diplomacy, defense, and global commerce (Korea ranks as America's eighth-largest trading partner), our alumni find opportunities in government service and multinational corporations across fields like technology, media, and healthcare.

Students should ideally complete StDev 317 during late sophomore or early junior year. Since liberal arts degrees offer versatile preparation rather than single-career paths, this course helps students clarify educational and professional objectives while exploring graduate programs, internships, and career paths. Participants will gain essential job-search skills and learn to leverage their specialized knowledge in the employment market.
