Learning French or Italian language and literature enhances critical thinking and communication abilities that are beneficial across various career fields. Students gain expertise in listening, reading, writing, and speaking while using literary works to explore both culture-specific and universal themes. These languages serve as powerful tools for research and communication in disciplines like music, art, history, European studies, international relations, library science, and comparative literature. Numerous students pursue Italian or French as a major or minor alongside another field such as accounting or business management, or as groundwork for professional degrees in public administration, business, organizational behavior, dentistry, law, or medicine. Graduates often enter government service, working with embassies, the State Department, the CIA, and other agencies, while others join the travel industry with airlines, tour operators, hotels, or resorts.
The French and Italian Department mandates at least 15 major credit hours be completed at BYU for this degree, which may also count toward the university's 30-hour graduation residency requirement.
Students must finish a minor (typically 16-21 credits) or 15 credits in an advisor-approved area, with courses needing approval prior to the senior year.
