The International Relations program effectively combines two majors - political science and economics - with a foreign language minor. This unique blend develops three highly sought-after competencies: strong writing abilities (cultivated through political science), quantitative and data analysis skills (developed in economics), and cultural/language proficiency in another nation. Those drawn to gaining these valuable capabilities while exploring global affairs and international connections may find the IR major particularly appealing. However, students can explore world cultures through various academic paths beyond IR, including internationally-focused social science disciplines (like political science, history, geography, or economics), regional studies programs, language degrees, or customized major-minor combinations.
With limited exceptions, courses cannot be counted toward multiple requirements within the major. Due to significant curriculum overlap, international relations majors are ineligible to simultaneously pursue economics or political science as either a second major or minor.
