The French and Italian Department mandates at least 21 major credit hours to be completed on campus at BYU for this degree. These credits can also fulfill BYU's 30-hour residency requirement for graduation.
The French BA program begins with FREN 321. Students may need to complete some or all of these prerequisite courses: FREN 101, 102, 201, 202. Those with previous French knowledge should consult the undergraduate advisor to determine the suitable starting level. Native speakers and returned missionaries usually begin with FREN 321, while FREN 202 might be better for students with limited language background.
We strongly encourage majors to engage in substantial French-language immersion experiences. Options include serving a mission, participating in Study Abroad programs, completing internships, or living in the Foreign Language Student Residence for a semester.
