Develop expertise in English grammar and style while mastering the blend of science and artistry involved in transforming raw manuscripts into polished publications across books, magazines, and other media.
The journey from manuscript to finished publication combines equal parts science and art—this program equips you with both. As part of the Linguistics Department, you'll first study linguistic science, covering topics like language evolution, variation, structure, and practical usage that directly enhance your editing skills. You'll then immerse yourself in hands-on editing, gaining real-world experience through classroom projects and external publications.
The curriculum starts with core courses in linguistics, research, history, grammar, and usage, along with career exploration. After completing grammar studies, you'll progress to the editing core, beginning with ELING 350 for copyediting and line editing, followed by ELING 410R for genre-specific substantive editing (varies by section and instructor). DIGHT 230, covering design, layout, and typesetting, can be taken at any point. These courses culminate in ELING 430R, where you'll collaborate with peers under mentorship to produce an actual print or digital publication.
