Politics explores the concepts, systems, and historical developments that influence how communities govern themselves throughout history and around the world. Political studies investigate how societies establish frameworks to resolve disputes and foster collaboration, how they distribute wealth and authority, and how they formulate and execute governmental decisions. Grasping these concepts is essential for becoming an informed and engaged member of society.
At Brandeis, our political curriculum combines academic rigor with real-world political engagement. Students explore diverse civilizations—both past and present, from Western and non-Western traditions—to acquire the understanding and viewpoint necessary for evaluating and participating effectively in political systems. A particular emphasis is placed on global and comparative politics, along with studying democracies shaped by ethnic, gender, religious, and racial diversity.
Through seminar discussions, students refine their analytical, interpretive, and communication abilities while mastering the art of crafting perceptive evaluations and presenting logical positions.
Graduates from our program are prepared for numerous professional paths, including roles in government, nonprofit organizations, policy research, media, legal practice, and corporate sectors, as well as advanced studies in political science and related social sciences.
