As a creative writing major at Brandeis, you'll dive into intimate writing workshops, literary studies, and artistic practice, equipping you for a life dedicated to writing. You'll graduate with deep knowledge of literary traditions and cultural contexts while developing your unique creative perspective. The program offers specializations in fiction, poetry, or screenwriting, with honors candidates collaborating closely with faculty mentors to create exceptional creative portfolios.

Brandeis boasts a rich legacy in creative writing, offering courses since 1951 and establishing it as an independent major in 2003.

Our program stands apart by employing exclusively professional writers as instructors. You'll train under accomplished, published authors who are equally passionate about teaching. Notable visiting writers have included literary luminaries like Alice Walker, John Irving, and Saul Bellow.

Workshops maintain an intimate scale, capped at just 14 students. Open to all undergraduates, these sessions foster collaboration among students from diverse disciplines including neuroscience, Judaic studies, African and African-American studies, fine arts, law, business, and biology.

We maintain a vibrant program calendar featuring reading series, student competitions, panel discussions, publishing workshops, and performance opportunities. Our Reading Series regularly hosts acclaimed poets, novelists, and translators for campus readings and student interactions, with past guests including Tom Perrotta, Jamaica Kincaid, Carl Phillips, Kazim Ali, Adrienne Rich, Sharon Olds, and Mark Doty.
