The biomedical engineering concentration prepares students for medical school or careers in researching and developing healthcare industry products. This concentration enables the application of mechanical engineering principles to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes. Students gain the versatility to pursue careers in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or medicine. Coursework provides knowledge in mechanical engineering along with expertise in developing prosthetics, artificial organs, medical implants, MRI imaging, CAT scans, and other life-improving devices. Students participate in laboratory settings with numerous hands-on experiments and engage in research or design projects. The program culminates in a yearlong team project where students develop a product or solution for healthcare professionals or medical device companies. This education prepares graduates to develop products and procedures that enhance quality of life.
