The Family Life Science (FLS) program aligns with guidelines established by the National Council on Family Relations and the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences. This curriculum prepares graduates for diverse career paths in social services, extension programs, family support interventions, community education, government organizations, and family wellness initiatives. Coursework provides the foundation for students to qualify for the Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) certification. The mandatory minor enables students to gain specialized knowledge in complementary fields.
Through academic study and practical training, students cultivate essential family life education competencies. The program's curriculum specifically readies participants for the CFLE examination.
Upon completion, graduates will have gained:
Hands-on experience through internships with organizations like University of Illinois Extension, Crittenton Centers, Common Place, Family House, and OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois
Practical coursework covering family dynamics, child development, consumer education, and relationship studies
Professional growth opportunities through involvement with Kappa Omicron Nu (KONu), the national honor society
