The Master of Theological Studies (MTS) program draws individuals who find deep meaning—even spiritual fulfillment—in the scholarly exploration of theology. MTS candidates may be pursuing doctoral preparation for academic careers, preparing for congregational ministry, seeking ordination as deacons, or aiming for nonprofit sector work. We recognize that MTS students come with diverse aspirations. Fortunately, Boston University School of Theology's extensive academic offerings allow exploration of any theological discipline. Our distinguished faculty maintain rigorous academic expectations while facilitating cross-disciplinary opportunities through the University and the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium.
This two-year, full-time degree program starts with foundational courses in theology, history, and scripture, complemented by contextual education that extends learning beyond traditional classrooms. After completing core requirements, students may either pursue a flexible, open curriculum tailored to their interests or select a specialized concentration. While specializations allow deeper engagement with specific fields, they still preserve ample elective options. Additionally, the MTS can be combined with social work (MTS/MSW) or education (MTS/MAT) through dual degree programs.
